I managed to remove OpenOffice 2.4 by removing OpenOffice.org-core and it didn't seem to remove Ubuntu-Desktop :-) Saying that when I upgrade I generally wipe everything and install from scratch as I tend to install a whole load of un-needed stuff when I play with things.
