Distributed VCS is definitely the future, but don't cripple yourself by only following one. Git is essential if you intend to work on the kernel or in Ruby on Rails, whilst knowing Bazaar [1] is also essential if you are going to be working on Ubuntu or with Launchpad. Mecurial [2] also has it's place, and Subversion [3] will not be disappearing any time soon. Obviously I'm biased towards Bazaar, but I have used and continue to use the others where appropriate. The trick is to be familiar with, and practice, version control (distributed or otherwise) in general. That will serve you far better than tying yourself to any single tool.
