One of the first things I did with my new machine was switch it to one desktop only, because as long as it was set to two, I found that it would skid from one desktop to the other every time I tried to drag the pointer across the screen. This is presumably the result of a default pointer behaviour that can be specifically turned off, but personally I don't feel a need for more than one desktop anyway.
