Have you tried using System > Preferences > Display
Of course, it was the first thing I tried.
It just gives an error message as follows:
It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary
extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver
vendor's tool instead?
No Yes
If I click on Yes, it takes me to the NVIDIA X Server Settings dialog. I
can choose the right resolution from that, but next time I boot the
resolution is reset back to 1280 x 1024. There is an option to save to
xorg.conf, which I have tried several times, but it makes no difference.
