Hi all,

for those who are keen to learn about how GNU/Linux (i.e. not just
Ubuntu) really works I would thoroughly recommend this project.

I started building LFS systems in about 1999 and it really is probably
the best way to get to know what goes into a Linux distribution and how
all the various bits plug together.

The project is basically a book that educates and instructs the reader
on how to build a complete (but basic) GNU/Linux OS completely from
scratch, i.e. the source code.

On completion of the book you can then go on to read Beyond Linux From
Scratch (BLFS) to add useful applications on top of your system.

Well worth looking into if you are hungry for knowledge.

Hi,

The Linux From Scratch community is pleased to announce the release of
LFS Version 6.5. This release includes numerous changes from LFS-6.4
(including updates to Linux-2.6.30.2, GCC-4.4.1, and Glibc-2.10.1) and
security fixes. It also includes editorial work on the explanatory material
throughout the book, improving both the clarity and accuracy of the text.

You can read the book online[0], or download to read locally [1].

Please direct any comments about this release to the LFS development team
at [email protected]. Please note that registration for the
lfs-dev mailing list is required to avoid junk email.

Regards,

Matt.
