Bingo! That's fixed the wired connection, which is now working perfectly. I still don't see the previous NetworkManager behaviour of selecting just the wired connection if present: rather, the ethernet and the wireless NICs both connect now. (I don't know whether that's a problem?) Anyway, I can just disconnect the wireless if I need to (e.g. for upgrading).
