Indeed. I use a Canon CanoScan LiDE 25, which isn't overly old but was very cheap (from Amazon, with free delivery). I went for Canon as I'd heard of their reputation in producing high-quality SLR cameras and have been remarkably impressed by the level of detail and colour depth that it has picked up in my own old photographs. It works flawlessly with xsane and takes up minimal physical space. I've just looked on Amazon and noticed they have a more recent version, CanoScan LiDE 100 for under 50 quid, which apparently scans up to 2400x4800dpi with 48-bit colour. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-2923B010AA-CanoScan-LiDE-Scanner/dp/B001EO6Z9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283169537&sr=8-1 If I was looking to buy a scanner, this is probably the one I would go for.
