I had exactly that experience when installing my Brother DCP135c under
11.10. The damaged installation prevented updates and installation of
new packages. The only way out I found was to re-install Ubuntu from
scratch. After that, I used the Software Centre instead of dpkg to
install the printer and scanner drivers, and it worked OK. I wrote a
script that does all the tweaks - they sound very similar to the ones
you have to do.
