Sometimes during the development release odd things happen and the ubuntu-desktop or other critical packages can get removed temporarily. The above command will (re-)install anything that _should_ be installed on the desktop system.
Surprising how often this command 'magically' fixes stuff.

Thanks to all who have replied. I think I have a far better understanding now of the release process. This is the first time I've followed a release through all stages by actually using it. It's been a very interesting process, and I have nothing but total admiration to the various bug-teams. I shall certainly repeat the process again with Quirky (or whatever 12.10 gets to be called). Obviously I'll set it up to dual-boot with Precise and keep meticulous backups.
