That's odd. I have had an issue with VLC on two completely separate
installs of 12.04 and 12.10 which appeared and rectified itself of it's
own accord. The really strange thing is that being on payg 3g I can't do
updates very often and all these problems are arriving and solving
themselves without any changes to the system.

I had something similar a couple of weeks back where the Writer
launcher started Thunderbird instead. It seems to have fixed itself.
