I don't claim to be an expert, but this sounds to me a lot like the
stuff in the BIOS that prevents systems other than Windows from
running. It's called UEFI secure boot. Look for it on the
interweb. If it is that, then there may or may not be an override in
the BIOS settings. If not, then it will be impossible to run either
a native install or a Wubi install on that machine. Take it back and
complain.

Yes, exactly. But whether I can complain about it is another question.
I can imagine them having some get-out clause in the sales contract,
which itself is somewhere in the Windows system. But there are ways
round this; they're just complicated. They involve manually installing
partitions and start points, as I recall from browsing this earlier.
I'd be inclined to take it back and complain simply to make the point. I
don't want to be handcuffed to Windows 'hate'.
