Have you trawled through the BIOS setup settings? There may be an
option to override the UEFI. The system will complain that this is
'dangerous' but it isn't!

Yup, I think so, I mean I've been into them a dozen times and I haven't
seen anything that looks as helpful as that. When I started trying to do
this, I found a chat forum where someone explained just how difficult it
really is, though I can't find it again now. Probably if I followed his
exact instructions, which involve creating partitions (including a swap
partition specifically for Ubuntu), and, I think, defining start points
as GUIDs or whatever, I could do it.
