It took me an hour or so to track down the best way of doing it. If your device isn't visible in Sound Settings (or in the Sound control panel) open a terminal and see if it's visible to aplay -l. If it isn't then it may not be supported, but that would unusual. The simplest solution is to install gstreamer, which should make it available to pulseaudio.
