This is correct. Drupal (the site software) just wants an email to confirm the information is correct. However, it will still automatically update your information from Launchpad. Essentially it's still your Launchpad account, it just wants to verify your info so that it can "link" your information to the site.
I'll see if I can have that page skipped on first sign-on, but I'm not sure it's possible.
