The last time I remember a GUI desktop being supported for 256 MB
machines was Dapper Drake, 6.06. By 8.04, anyway, a desktop was
indicated to require 512 MB.

Of course, if you don't run a GUI, you're home free. You can install and
run the server edition, with its command line interface, on as little as
128 MB. And you wondered why old timers call GUIs "bloated".
