Welcome, Linda! Glad to have you amongst us. Obviously, much of the
content I provided for Che applies to you, so I won't repeat myself. ☺

I will say that I have a Nexus 4 with Ubuntu Touch on it and it's
lovely. I have started learning development and it's remarkably
simple, even for someone used to programming. Surely, lower level
access will require C++ knowledge, but other than that, it's as simple
as markup! If you need some help learning, let me know, and don't
forget about the Ubuntu Phone team/mailing list:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone
They just released a new porting guide:
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/start/ubuntu-for-devices/porting-new-device/
that may be helpful if you don't have one of the targeted devices.

The best advice I can give to people like yourself who are advocates
of Linux because of their good experiences is contribute, contribute,
contribute. There's a place for everyone, whether you like to do
support, documentation, artwork, marketing, testing, bug triage,
development, etc. As I said to Che, I'm happy to help you find your
place. There is time requirement or anything like that. We're all
volunteers here ☺

Oh and I forgot to tell Che, there are a plethora of interesting
breweries in Eugene. Though Ninaski tends to be the most well-known, I
suggest Oakshire:

Again, welcome!
