I upgraded to 9/04 and tried again. There is an additional twist that has to do with bug 373634.
When I don't have the virtual desktop size set (meaning I have DRI HW acceleration) the bug still happens. When I do have virtual desktop size (meaning Mesa SW fallback) the bug does not happen. So this probably has something to do with DRI and/or desktop compositing. I use a bog standard x86 Ubuntu install.
