X is also crashing here after login. The compiz update to 0.8.2-0ubuntu12 changed the behavior somewhat. Before the update, X crashed as soon as I had entered my password. After the update, I can see at least gnome-panel loading, then it crashes.
Note that X only crashes if I enable KMS. Without KMS, X does not crash.
