Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Screen corruption on xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024.

This happens on i855GM in Jaunty.

The highest resolution on the laptop monitor is 1024x768.
The external monitor is detected and I can choose 1280x1024, but when I do, the
display output gets corrupted.

This seems to be very similar to bug #325781
