Hi Bryce, And Thanks for your reply with new fglrx. But, as I said, I installed the updated ATI drivers from its website and the problem was solved. It seems that it was not a Ubuntu problem.
Otherwise, some time later I had an unrecoverable crash waking up the laptop. I've filed a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /gnome-power-manager/+bug/390827). Finally, I had to format the HD and re-install the OS. This time I've installed Kubuntu 9.04.
