The absence of an updated nvidia-current package may be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dkms/+bug/602408

The nvidia binary driver comes with a wrapper that needs to be built for
the current kernel. You ought to be able to install the current kernel
source, then uninstall and reinstall nvidia-current to get a working
driver. However, DKMS insists that "kernel source for this kernel does
not seem to be installed" even when it is.
