I just upgraded my T60p to maverick and experience the same behaviour with the open source ati driver from maverick repo:
Single Screen (1680x1050) works with compiz, fast as before. If I plug in my secondary screen, set it to 1440x900 compiz keeps running, desktop effects all still work, but are very slow. No screen/window corruption, but the desktop turns black. Switching back to metacity lets the desktop reappear.
