It is now 31/1/11 , even after all suggested updates have been installed the problem still exists. I have noted an occasional nvidia logo screen appear briefly at start up (not often). I have also had the start-up work perfectly at times. I noticed that nvidia X server settings were included in the list of start-up applications and unselected it, preventing it starting.
