I get the same with 2.6.38-5-generic #32-Ubuntu on 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) I kill X with ALT-SYSRQ-K to get it to restarts. The text consoles still work.
