What was the result? What did you do before and how did you fix it? I had a similar problem when upgrading from Karmic, leading to no graphics on restart (fglrx line was not removed from Xorg.conf). I also had remnants/packages in the dpkg DB, manual use of aptitude to tidy it all up. I saw another message when removing it recently - installArchives() failed.
