I can provide this additional piece of information: when the screen freezes i switch to tty1, login to my account, and sudo killall Xorg. I can hear Xorg restarting because speakers play the usual "login screen sound". But the screen is completely black (it is still turned on, but completely black). The tty's are just fine, i can read and write on them.
