In my last comment I wrote that I installed "fglrx" via "additional
drivers", but I just noticed that /etc/X11/xorg.conf still has "ati" as
driver. So it seems the installation did not alter my xorg.conf.

Also the last few days (that I got X working with this "ati" driver) I
noticed my laptop became burning hot and after 30min would shutdown on
its own.

And as I now change xorg.conf driver manually to "fglrx", the temperature is
less high and doesn't shutdown
any more. So the heat was caused by the "ati" driver.

Iin short the workaround after the upgrade to 11.04 (which I believe let fglrx
crash and so X) seems:
1. remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or move it to another name to have the backup)
2. sudo aticonfig --initial
3. change /etc/X11/xorg.conf driver "fglrx" into "ati" (as fglrx still crashes
at this point)
4. reboot, X should start OK now, so update remaining stuff of 11.04
5. Via "system" "additional drivers" select the proprietary driver "fglrx".
6. Now change /etc/X11/xorg.conf driver "ati" back into "fglrx"
7. reboot, X should start OK with the fglrx driver which prevents the heat
issue.
