I just upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 to 11.04 Natty and hit this issue. The solution that worked for me seems a bit simpler than some of the ones offered earlier so hopefully this will help someone.
Hit Alt-F2 Type gconf-editor and hit return Browse to desktop/gnome/peripherals key Look for your touchpad - mine looked like "SybPS@47@2..." Uncheck the "disable while other device exists" option Bingo! Presumably the problem was that Thinkpads have two built-in pointing devices. While the solution turned out to be simple, it took me a good hour to figure it out and the earlier comments in this thread helped me to start looking in the right place.
