So I have done some more testing now.
NVidia proprietary drivers are really not compatible with libgl-mesa build
which is gl-enabled.
This is the issue.

Workaround:
I installed the latest cairo build from Oneiric official repos, that is a non
gl build (1.10.2-2ubuntu4).
Then I installed the latst nvidia-current from Oneiric official repos
(280.13-0ubuntu1).
everything works now fine, without any hang-ups and without any high speeding
up CPU problems.

** Also affects: cairo
   Importance: Undecided
       Status: New
