Tried oneiric daily build 2011-09-20 i386, same results. ISOlinux boot menus work, startup and shutdown splash screens work, text consoles work, in X the mouse is OK, but the unity bar, task bar, and application windows are squished/stripey/unreadable. I presume this means that vesa modes are OK as long as acceleration hardware isn't in use.
