I had a similar problem with the nvidia driver doing TwinView. The X-server took every now and then a whole CPU core of two cores present. Opposed to the bug report my system always recovered after some minutes.
Recently I found out about Qt's graphicssystem options raster and OpenGL (see http://labs.qt.nokia.com/2009/12/16/qt-graphics-and-performance-an- overview/). In short, the Qt people concentrate to improve the raster system on all supported platforms because OpenGL has some drawbacks. On the other hand at least the kubuntu people decided to set OpenGL as default. They have some good reasons for that either. I installed package kde-qt-config-graphicssystem and used it to switch the graphicssystem from default to raster in KDE's system settings and now all performance problems are blown away. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586027 Title: xserver causes extreme cpu-load unexpected [Lucid] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/586027/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
