GDM shows a blank screen when:
1) switching user
2) going to terminal with ctrl+alt+F1 and then back to ctrl+alt+F7
3) ctrl+alt+backspace
Note:
it is still possible to blindly enter username/password and hear login sound ok
in the above mentioned cases.
