The slowness has been fixed with the latest updates to compiz, but the problem with it incorrectly reporting vesa as the driver is still present. The new fglrx 8.960 seems to be quite awesome. It is fast, and it has seemingly full compatibility with Gnome-Shell now, though possibly still a bit slow.
