1.901920 after boot; the udev doesn't start on the root filesystem until 
2.244658 according to BootDmesg.txt

this a kernel bug
<slangasek> fundamentally, there is still a race in how we're handling video at 
boot... but as my earlier surprise indicates, I think it's incredibly unlikely 
we'll hit it in practice
