I just tried Ubuntu 12.04 and this is definitely not fixed in the default Unity interface… there is still a lot of tearing when playing https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers/+bug/600178/+attachment/2134500/+files/teartest.mp4 on my i5-2540m.
