Addendum to the above. I have upped the swap to 4GB and enabled
Hibernate (it's disabled by default in 12.04).

First impression is that it simply makes the sleep/wake cycle take a
hell of a lot longer, but I don't have the flashing power LED which will
probably be an advantage if I take the machine to bed with me.

No log-out yet using hibernate, but I'll monitor behaviour over the next
few days. Watch this space.
