As an intermediate step, according to this page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Tools I installed the open-vm-
tools package.  That seemed to go okay, but it still doesn't look like
I'm using 3D:


grep -i open /tmp/glxinfo.txt 
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

and indeed I'm still getting the window corruption.
