I confirm that adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" to /etc/default/grub removes the screen corruption and square mouse pointer at pc boot, but compiz is unworkable, wobbly windows are disabled, unity icon laucher size default as in 2D, screen lags etc...
