This sounds like a match to bug #419264. The symptoms are slightly different however the workaround (killing compiz) and the timing of your last update suggest it's probably the same bug. There is a kernel with a patch proposed for fixing this bug in the comments of bug #41926 - do you mind booting and testing that kernel to verify it does indeed solve the bug you're seeing?
