I too have experienced this hard freeze, which requires me to power off the 
machine. It happens maybe once a day, if that. It usually happens after I've 
been doing a variety of different things for a few hours. From what I can 
remember, it happens while the following programs are open:
Chrome (a few tabs open; has NOT happened during video playback)
Empathy (a couple chat boxes open; logged into gTalk)
Rhythmbox (playing music)

I am unsure what specific action causes the hard freezes; it could be a
variety of things as far as I can tell.

Here are my system specs:
Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-35-generic
GNOME 3.4.2
Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM CPU @ 2.70GHz × 8
Ivy Bridge
16GB RAM
Intel SSD
