Thanks Walter, your workaround did it for me. In my case the Bios setup option was "Framebuffer size". My configuration: Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, NVidia onboard graphics, Driver 304.88, Desktop is Gnome Shell and/or Cinnamon. Have fun!
