still occurs under old kernel 3.8.0-23-generic, but perhaps it's an undiagnosed kernel bug there, showing up with tighter assertions in later drm/nouveau code. There's some drm/nouveau changes in upstream kernel I'll explore, then I'll re-post under kernel when I have fresh logs
