I've just tried Bryce's PPA. Boot gets to the login screen, but all attempts to log in with a Gnome session fails. I get the Star Trekian transporter effect, then the screen flashes to black, and then I'm right back at the login prompt. An xterm session does succeed. This is all I have in my .xsession-errors file:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
