As a potential WORKAROUND, if you are in Precise with the 3.2.x series kernel is this reproducible with fglrx-* as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI (as later releases won't work for your cards as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040 )?
