I modified the bug description since using nouveau (as it is the case with live iso images) instead of nvidia-binary does not change anything withe respect to backlight.
** Description changed: I am using Ubuntu 13.04, nvidia 313.30, fresh installation from scratch, on a MacBookPro10,1 (the one with Retina display). Two of my partition are encrypted (swap and /srv on which /home is bind mounted).Since some upgrade to linux-image-3.8.0-24 backlight control does not work anymore. I am stuck with 3.8.0-23 in order to get something kind of working (I have to go in sleep mode at least once in order to get backlight control available). The last "almost working" kernel is 3.8.0-23. I even tried 3.9.0-030900 "upstream" kernel with no success.
