@ Joseph Salisbury, There seemed to be some improvement in Ubuntu GNOME Utopic with the amd64 version of 3.16.7-031607-generic, at least I was able to boot that kernel w/o adding the nouveau.config=NvMSI=0 boot parameter, but then after spending a couple of minutes fiddling around when I attempted to open the System Settings UI the screen tore and X froze. So nouveau is still a failure with that specific GPU.
