the error was just like before

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

your right on the 2.6.28-15-generic, it might be to old, in fact  here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting they recommend to use
"2.6.30-2 kernel (or newer)"
