I am in complete agreement with your ideas about 1) a fix at the kernel level being better than a workaround at the evdev level (though perhaps both would be a worthy idea, in a belt-and- suspenders kind of way; are there any real-life devices which have both absolute and relative axes?) and 2) getting more eyes on it before it goes out to Joe Average User.
