I should note - I did try out xserver-xorg-input-synaptics yesterday
prior to getting your email, it had no effect

One thing I did find, I'm not sure if it has any bearing, but my current
kernel is:

5.4.0-7626-generic

With this kernel, as I mentioned before I could move the trackpad at the
login screen, but the buttons didn't work; on login, no mouse input
worked.

I came across a thread about certain kernels having regression issues
with certain trackpads, so I tried the original kernel that came with my
distribution:

5.4.0-7625-generic

Now, with that kernel, at the login screen I can move the trackpad AND
use the trackpad buttons; still once I'm fully logged into the desktop
the trackpad doesn't work at all.

As I mentioned, not sure if this has any bearing, but I thought I should
mention it.
