I am also experiencing a severe drop in graphics performance after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic. This is particularly noticeable when switching from a desktop where Firefox is running (takes about 1-2 seconds while it used to be instantaneous) or compiling / installing some software in xterm (lots of textual output).
I am running a dual-head setup with one of the monitors rotated. My graphics card is a GeForce FX 5200 NVidia.
